Editor Shooting Shuts Down Mexican News Website

More violence against journalists in Mexico has caused a Mexican news website to shutdown for fear of more violence against its staff.

The Mexican news website The Universal reported on Tuesday (March 5) that the editor of Ojinnaga Noticias was gunned down on Sunday while driving home in the northern Mexico town of Ojinaga.

Journalist Jamie Guadalupe Gonzalez Dominguez was reportedly shot 17 times in his car by unknown assailants while stopped at an intersection.

Media reports say a camera was taken from the car which may have contained photos of alleged members of a criminal gang in the town. A female passenger in the car was unhurt but shaken by the shooting.

As continuing violence in Mexico involving drugs continues to escalate unabated, many news agencies in the country have stopped covering drug crime as a precaution and in fear of deadly violence against journalists.

This is the first time according to the website Reporters Without Borders that an entire news media outlet has shutdown due to violence against journalists.
